Learn about the history of Vietnam

Vietnam’s history is a breathtaking saga of resilience, defined by a 2,000-year struggle to maintain independence against overwhelming foreign influence, ranging from a millennium of Chinese rule to 19th-century French colonization. After rising up to expel the Japanese during WWII, the Vietnamese, under Ho Chi Minh, fought and won a decisive battle against the French in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, yet the victory was immediately marred by a forced partition into a communist North and a Western-aligned South. This set the stage for the intensely controversial Vietnam War (1955–1975)—known in Vietnam as the "Resistance War Against America"—a conflict defined by fierce jungle warfare, global superpower involvement, and massive destruction. The war became the longest in U.S. history, marked by major turning points like the 1968 Tet Offensive, before concluding with the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, and the reunification of the country under a communist regime. Following reunification, the nation faced immense rebuilding challenges until 1986, when it opened itself to the world with transformative economic reforms, morphing from a war-torn nation into one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing economies today.
